= RURAL ROOTS ROAD TRIP – a journey of youth taking
action!
“The first Rural Roots Tour that I participated in
had me standing in front of a crowd of 100 high school students
and speaking to them about the woes of our world. [It was]
undoubtedly cool!” – Antony Kalashnikov
Every fall and
spring, Rural Roots selects 3 – 5 Albertan youth to
come together and create an interactive presentation on
some of the local and global issues affecting young people
around the world. The team tours across Alberta, speaking
to rural and urban students about global matters like environmental
sustainability, poverty, water, human rights, health and
stigma, and social justice for all, and how they can get
involved in affecting change in the local and global community.
Our hope is to empower youth to be the change they wish
to see in the world, and to continue sharing the message
that we, as young people, can and do make a difference!
Our 2008 Road
Trip brought together the collective energies of: Nicole
Crawley (16, Bonnyville), Kailyn Jones (19, Sundre), and
Antony Kalashnikov (17, Edmonton). The team came up with
a presentation focusing on the Rights of the Child, and
engaged high school students in Innisfail, Calgary, and
Canmore on issues of access to education, HIV-AIDS and malaria,
and situations of war and conflict. Students participated
in high-energy activities, created and facilitated by the
team, in order to better understand the realities so many
children are facing around the world.
