“Film is a great way to get your message
across! The most challenging aspect was the amount of time
we had to film. Filming is such a long process and with
only 1 day to shoot it was really hard, but in the end it
was great because it made our team really gel together.”
– Dustin Mahar, 16
In
late February of 2008, 8 Albertan youth were chosen to take
part in an intensive 4 day documentary filmmaking workshop
called Change Your Lens. The youth met in Edmonton, AB,
and worked alongside Jaro Malanowski (Avatar Productions)
who facilitated the ins and outs of documentary making –
how to plan, shoot, and edit a documentary all within the
short time of 4 days!
Rural and urban
Albertan youth came together to share their knowledge of
local and global environmental issues, and compare the needs
and challenges faced by their different communities in order
to tackle climate change. The youth spent 1 day capturing
footage at the Muttart Conservatory, and interviewing one
another. After editing their footage at FAVA Studios, the
youth produced two 8-minute documentaries which were premiered
at the 2008 Shape Your World Conference last March.
