Annual Shape Your World Youth Conference
Rural Alberta activists unite to 'Shape Their World!'
Over 90 Alberta high school students travelled to Gull
Lake, AB, March 14-16 to take part in the ‘Shape Your
World Conference’ organized by Rural Roots & CFCA.
Students had the opportunity to hear the inspiring stories
of local activists, including Jon Jon Rivero (NO Sweat),
Ravi Jaipaul (Walk for Darfur), and Leila Darwish (The Sierra
Club).
They also participated in hands-on workshops promoting the
Millennium Development Goals. Vancouver-based NGO ‘Check
Your Head’ tackled the issue of climate change, while
a local UofA student group called ‘Earth Vibe’
showed kids how easy it is to be ‘green.’ Many
other creative activism workshops encouraged students to
use spoken word poetry, hip-hop, dance, drumming, and jewellery
to take action on social justice issues. The weekend was
filled with lots of energy, hands-on learning, and positive
vibes from all who participated in Shape Your World 2008.
"It’s super to be able to hear people your age
take action in so many different areas, and that they’re
actually making a difference" – Yasmine Abbas,
participant, age 16.

The Rural Roots Tour
In the summer of 2004, six youth participants came together
with a group of youth activists
and facilitators to develop an interactive presentation
about the root causes of poverty and social injustice.
In the fall, these youth participants travelled with their
finished presentation to schools throughout rural Alberta,
and challenge their peers to act on the issues that they
see affecting their communities and their world.
