Laura Roberts, a former CFCA board member,
travelled to Brazil in the summer of 2003 to research the
new government of Lula da Silva. During her stay, Laura filmed
CFCA’s project partners in the north-east of Brazil.
The projects she filmed include:
Thallita, Hope and Life Association
- Maceio, Alagoas. The project
involves a safe house for street girls that offers educational
programming (formal education, literacy, health and hygiene,
crafts, dance, recreation), social work (case study, counseling,
legal documents and support, specific support as required),
and psychological support (group therapy, interpersonal
relations, sexuality, medical support, etc.).
Association of the Child and
Adolescent - Cha de Bebedouro, Maceio. This
project’s mandate is to promote active citizenship
and to increase the self-esteem of children, youth and women
in the poor communities of Cha de Bebedouro and Cha de Jaquiera.
The project provides community members with vocational training
workshops as well as cultural, recreational and artistic
activities for the children and youth of the communities.
Fundanor - Palmeria dos Indios,
Alagoas. This project provides shelter and refuge to abandoned
children, and houses approximately 100 boys and 40 girls.
The project offers carpentry classes and farming for the
boys, and jewelry-making and crochet stitching classes for
the girls.
The Free Association of the People
of Mangueira (ALMM) - Salvador, Bahia. ALMM’s
activities include a literacy education program called Educate
to Liberate, African history and cultural awareness programs,
a variety of income-generating initiatives including artisan
cooperatives, a community snack bar and luncheonette, a
street vendors program for young children, a food-buying
cooperative, apprenticeship programs, and a community health
post.
