5th Annual Event THIS Friday
Baring it all in the name of global health.
Twenty-two U of A medical students volunteered to pose nude for 33 local artists representing Edmonton’s best and brightest talent - all for a good cause. The resulting art work will be auctioned off at the 5th Annual Doctors and Derrières evening reception this Friday, April 30th, 2010 at Enterprise Square Gallery.
"This event is a fabulously original way for medical students and artists to collaborate and make a difference abroad," said Tammy Bach, a second year medical student event organizer and model.
All proceeds benefit Change for Children’s Emergency Social Health Fund in rural El Salvador. This project is an innovative, community-led response to a lack of health services. Using shared transport and a community micro-insurance scheme, this sustainable project ensures that several communities living under the poverty line have regular access to quality health care.

CFCA sends 40 people to Nicaragua
on dental brigades
This
month, over 40 dental professionals and helpers will visit our projects
in Nicaragua to offer much needed dental care to children and youth.
These kind people volunteer their time and cover their travel costs
to serve over 1500 patients during a two week period. Change for
Children is also participating in the implementation of an Oral
Health Project in Nicaragua, in conjunction with Kindness in Action,
which adds sustainability and a preventative component to our annual
brigades.
Dr. Don Danchuk, a veteran
participant on Change for Children's dental brigades had this to
say: "This is a really rewarding experience - we are able to
offer our skills for a brief period of time to children in Nicaragua
who would not otherwise have access to dental care, and who are
suffering from serious oral health conditions that could be life
threatening.
We get so much more back than we give though, there is a real sense
of fulfillment that you get from helping these wonderful people
- and they are so grateful for the service. We feel so much love
from the Nicaraguan people that we keep going back for more."

in participating in next year's brigade to the jungles of BOSAWAS

CFCA's
Global Kids Birthday Club
When
Ziggy Bessai recently turned 6, he put the call out to his birthday
guests that donations towards the school construction project in
Guatemala would be a great way to celebrate. His party raised $230.
His pal, Michael Mcarthy, was inspired to do the same for his birthday
which soon followed. Last week, Michael delivered $265 in donations
collected at his 7th birthday to the CFCA office! The generousity
and commitment of children like Michael and Ziggy who have made
their birthdays a way to benefit other children has inspired us
to create the Global Kids Birthday Club.
A recent article
in the Edmonton Journal, Bring on some birthday charity instead
highlights the generousity of kids and the impact there birthday
'giving' can have on others.

your child interested in being part of the Global Kids Birthday
Club - check out how
easy it is!
Global Kids, Ziggy & Michael, raised almost $500 towards the
construction of a new school for children in Guatemala through their
7th birthday parties!
Radio-Drama
Project a Great Success in Lima, Peru!
Change
for Children’s Radio Drama Project in the barrio of Villa
El Salvador in Lima, Peru is implemented by Manos Libres, a small
Peruvian NGO that works primarily with women, youth and children
in the urban shanty communities. Teenage mothers learn and employ
creative, empowering methods to tell their stories and offer advice
and resources to their peers. In their role as "radio stars",
these young mothers are neither victims, nor are they powerless.
With Manos Libres they create poignant scripts based on their real
life experiences and share them with other youth over the airwaves.
Radio
is a powerful tool in Villa El Salvador where very few households
have televisions. Together with specialists in theatre, psychology
and health, these young mothers create stories that offer serious
and accessible messages about sexual health, domestic violence and
healthy childcare. These ‘radio-dramas’ also provide
practical advice to young girls about continuing their education,
making safe sexual choices and believing in themselves and their
futures. Phone-in interviews with nurses, doctors, and counselors
are also part of the weekly show, and great musical interludes complete
the unique program created entirely by young people from Villa El
Salvador and listened to by thousands of their peers.
Many
of you donated to this project at our fall Development Dinner fundraiser.
We wanted to let you know that Manos Libres reported that the program
has been an enormous success!

to help build a school for the children of Guatemala with CFCA partner
AMMID.
Participating
in a ‘real-time’ discussion between students in Comitancillo,
Guatemala and students from across North America is a powerful,
powerful thing.
Discussions revolved around everything from globalization to basketball
as rural, indigenous Guatemalan youth were exposed for the first
time to the wonders of video conference technology. Indeed, it was
an incredible and once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity for all
students who participated in the 3rd Annual Video Conference for

At
CFCA's Annual Development Dinner October 3, MC Mark Scholz started
the night with CFCA's guiding words: partnership, dignity, health,
support-not charity. He went on to introduce two of our projects
in South America and talk about the solutions these projects offer
communities that have been caught in a cycle of poverty in Bolivia
and Peru. He then set the plan for the night "these communites
need our support and tonight were going to do it"; and that
we did.
When the will
is there, big things can happen and that is what we saw. A room
of 160 people combining high school students to founding CFCA members,
long time supporters to new friends came together to get the job
done. Forty people committed $100 to support the establishment of
an automotive vocational training and income generating shop for
youth in Potosi Bolivia - and the funding for the other three 'shops'
was picked up by donors able to make a larger donations including
the Frank Flaman Foundation, Fountain Tire and Don and Donna Savard.
And that was just the beginning. The evening raised an incredible
$50,000!!!
Rishi Jaipaul
attended the event for the first time. He is a student at Grant
MacEwan and will be a volunteer participant for the 2009 Project
Hope team which will work with CFCA on a community development project
in BOSAWAS Nicaragua - "I am so inspired by what happened and
seeing so many people willing to step up and make a difference...I
am so motivated and excited by what I saw."

St. Angela's Elementry School (13430
132A Street)
The Children’s Rights Mural Project gathers local and international
(Nicaraguan) mural painters and a team of volunteers in a collaborative
effort to convey messages of social justice. Focused on the rights
of the child this project engages participants and the general public
in a multi-faceted discussion about children’s rights and
multiculturalism. The 70ft by 9ft Child Rights Mural will be painted
on the exterior second floor wall of Edmonton’s St Angela’s
Elementary School. The design of the Mural is being created through
a collaborative process involving a team of local and international
artists (including CFCA founder Hank Zyp) and the students of St
Angela’s.
Change for Children
has a thirty-two year history of offering innovative educational
programming in Canada that is creative, participatory and inter-generational.
CFCA was founded on the principle that the way to achieve real and
sustainable change is to build bridges between communities in the
developing world and communities, schools and organizations in Canada.
Ed Carson, one
of Change for Children’s most committed supporters, taught
at St. Angela’s school for over 20 years and has been an incredible
catalyst for the involvement of hundreds of Canadians in human rights
and social justice work. For thirty years, Ed has dedicated his
life to achieving full rights for all children and has promoted
and utilized the arts as a critical tool for achieving this. Ed
has had a profound impact on many communities and many individuals
credit Ed Carson for their own commitment to changing the world.
It is his example that is the inspiration for this project.
"We know
that this mural will tell everyone who sees it – that we are
a school that supports all of the children and all of the cultures
in our community and that all children have self worth and are special.
It will serve as a source of inspiration for us to continue following
in Ed’s footsteps. Undoubtedly it will be an eternal legacy
for Ed and a constant reminder of his commitment to social justice"
- St Angela’s Staff
Your
Support and participation:
Panels
‘purchased’ for $500 each will offer tremendous support
this project. A commemorative plaque with names of all contributors
will be mounted at St Angela’s School, demonstrating our shared
commitment to the rights of all children, our acknowledgment of
the inspiration of Ed Carson’s lifetime work, and provide
a public affirmation of our continued advocacy for Children’s
rights here at home and around the world. We encourage you to consider
purchasing a mural panel in the name of your family or community
group.
Change for Children's
rich history promoting art as a tool in rights education and solidarity
has been largely facilitated by Ed Carson. Join with us in celebrating
his incredible work.

Erin
Prout had been thinking a long time about taking action - doing
something to make a difference. She finally made the committment
and came into the CFCA office to talk about her idea of turing her
23 birthday into a fundraiser for CFCA.
With a number of creative friends and her good friend Claudia Tomczyk
on board as key production help, plans began for a party with Trash
Art Silent auction at local pub Red Star. Her goal was to raise
$500 - the result was $2000!!
"I am so
blown away at how giving people were, how easy and fun it was. It
makes me feel so good to actually have done it - to have done something
in support of something I really believe in," said Erin after
her party, "this was way better than having my grandparents
spend $300 on a steak dinner!"

June 6th Change for Children presented a fundraiser celebrating
the ongoing partnerships between Albertans and Nicaraguans rooted
in commitment to Children’s Rights. For over thirty years,
CFCA members have connected with Nicaraguan communities through
work projects and educational exchanges. The effect in both countries
has been transformative, as we have learned from and supported each
other in our efforts to achieve basic rights for children.

celebrating the human body are then donated by each artist to be
auctioned off at the main event. This year there will be more than
50 pieces up for auction. Proceeds will support Change for Children's

Rural Alberta activists
unite to 'Shape Their World!'
Over 90 Alberta
high school students travelled to Gull Lake, AB, March 14-16, 2008
to take part in the ‘Shape Your World Conference’ organized
by Rural Roots & CFCA. Students had the opportunity to hear
the inspiring stories of local activists, including Jon Jon Rivero
(NO Sweat), Ravi Jaipaul (Walk for Darfur), and Leila Darwish (The
Sierra Club).
They also participated
in hands-on workshops promoting the Millennium Development Goals.
Vancouver-based NGO ‘Check Your Head’ tackled the issue
of climate change, while a local UofA student group called ‘Earth
Vibe’ showed kids how easy it is to be ‘green.’
Many other creative activism workshops encouraged students to use
spoken word poetry, hip-hop, dance, drumming, and jewellery to take
action on social justice issues. The weekend was filled with lots
of energy, hands-on learning, and positive vibes from all who participated
in Shape Your World 2008.
